The Sounds of Horror
Halloween for me is not just the mad decorating, costuming, horror tv watching, or scaring people. An integral part has also long been what Halloween audio has to offer.
I used to have quite a commute and the idea of so many wasted hours each week behind a wheel was truly scary. In order to make that time as productive as possible, I started collecting and listening to audio books. Besides my passion for science, science-fiction, and fantasy, the horror genre was well represented in my collection of 200 audio cassettes (yes, this was a while ago). Over the years I amassed a collection of horror titles that I would listen to primarily in the month of October. Short fiction was my favorite so I would re-listen to my favorites every year during the Halloween season.
Podcasts were ideally suited to this fall pastime as I transitioned from cassettes and CDs to a pure digital format. As such, I now have a library of creepy Halloween/horror podcasts that, like I used to do with the cassettes, I go through every fall as the days get chillier and the leaves get beautifuler.
The following is a list of some my favorites from the fantastic horror podcast called Pseudopod. I hope you’ll give them a listen and enjoy them as much as I do.
This wonderful story is about an ancient Bone Witch in a medieval setting who lives in an isolated magically sentient house made of bones. Still a force to be reckoned with she is however increasingly hampered by failing eyesite, aching joints, and the desire for the rarest of rare purple roses that she can transmogrify into a potion to make her young again. She hasn’t come across one in centuries until a man appears riding a horse. What will it take to get if from him and what will the price be to him if he betrays her.
An un-named man is living during a zombie apocalypse. He finds an empty well-stocked house to hole-up in and one day spots a well-dressed zombie shambling into town. This zombie transfixes him with his smarter-than-your average-zombie ways and his resemblence to his lost son Billy. He watches this other “Billy” for hours each day through his boarded up windows. What does Billy do and should he be stopped?
Warning: This is an intense and very explicit story.
The world is getting colder.,,relentlessly A mother experiences visions and based on them she lights her children on fire. She is now in a mental institution and asked inane questions every day. She feels that she is never asked the right question though: “When will the nightmares break through, When will we be devoured by the darkness that lurks, When will we all fall screaming into the frozen pit of hell”. Yes, hell is not hot but a frozen stygian pit and it is ruled by a Winter God and he’s done hiding.
Amenemhet was a prominent man in ancient Egypt, until he was murdered. Now his ghost (or Ka) roams his city with the other dead. He is forced to bear mute witness as his rich and even more prominent murderer manipulates his family so they can become his. How can an utterly powerless ghost let them know what really happened to him and what is really happening to them. The narration of this story is top notch.
