The Ballet of Solar Systems
Astronomy graduate student Ethan Kruse of the University of Washington has produced a video animation titled Kepler Orrery IV. In it, Kruse compares the orbits of hundreds of exoplanets in the Kepler database to that of our own solar system.
An “orrery” is a mechanical model of a solar system. These types of animations have become popular in the era of exoplanets to demonstrate the incredible variety of planetary systems which have been discovered. Kepler Orrery IV shows all of the Kepler multi-planet systems (1705 planets in 685 systems as of November 24, 2015) on the same scale as our own Solar System (the dashed lines on the right side of the video).
An elegant reminder that our solar system is just one of billions in just our galaxy alone. Enjoy!
