Soap, Supposedly Made From Holocaust Victims, For Sale
If you are familiar with the horrors and atrocities of the Nazi extermination of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally disabled, and other people deemed to be inferior to “The Master Race”, then you have likely heard that Nazis would take some of the bodies of the murdered, and melt their fat down in order to make bars of soap.
Chances are you have also heard that this is considered to be one of the many “myths” which came out of the World War II era. Decades of research in to this claim has revealed that the truth is somewhere in the middle. Yes, soap was being made at some concentration camps using the fat of the murdered. However, the incidents were limited and never produced on any sort of industrial scale (as some stories would have us all believe.) This was confirmed scientifically in 2006 in Poland, when specialists in the chemistry of fat made tested soap samples from the archive of the International Court of Justice in The Hague and found them to contain some human remains.
Last week, Metro.co.uk reported that bars of soap, supposedly made from the body fat of Holocaust victims in Nazi extermination camps, are being sold online. The soap bars are grey in color, rectangular in shape, and bear the letter markings “RJF”, which as the stories are told, stands for “Rein Juden Fett”, or “pure Jewish fat”.
Fortunately, this particular claim concerning these specific bars of soap is a myth. What appears to be a letter”J” is actually the letter “I”. The Jewish Virtual Library has examined various claims and accounts of human-derived soaps being produced at Nazi death camps. They have found that the majority of the exaggerated claims are untrue, however, there are a few select facts to be found within the claims. For example:
The “RIF” soap bar initials that supposedly stood for “Pure Jewish Fat” actually indicated nothing more sinister than “Reich Center for Industrial Fat Provisioning” (“Reichsstelle für Industrielle Fettversorgung”), a German agency responsible for wartime production and distribution of soap and washing products. RIF soap was a poor quality substitute that contained no fat at all, human or otherwise.
The exaggeration of the soap stories from that era indicate that in the 1940’s, Jews were led to believe that this was occurring, as a means of cruel intimidation and psychological torture. It is no wonder the rumors persisted, and the perceptions became “reality” for so many people living (and dying) at one of the most horrific periods and places in history.
That there is even a market for this kind of “collectible” is enough of a sickening thought, not to mention entirely illegal, but compounded with the fact that what these purveyors are selling is bogus is a sobering reminder about just how twisted some people can be.
