Photos From the Newest Place on Earth
As I correctly predicted in our first SGU episode of 2015, a new island rose from the Pacific Ocean courtesy of a very large underwater volcanic eruption. The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano produced the first new island of the year, located off of the coast of Tonga’s main island. Satellite images taken shortly after the eruption showed new rock formations and additional sediment in the surrounding sea. And like any newborn, the pictures are a beautiful sight to behold. Click over to The Atlantic (ironically) and enjoy these amazing new photos taken from the island, along with some other incredible photos of volcanic activity around the planet.
