Lawsuits: The Last Resort of the Lowest Charlatan
When your livelihood relies on pseudoscience, or the paranormal, or conning victims, you face a great threat to your income potential if you have skeptics refuting your claims and bringing awareness to your actions. As such, activists in the skeptical community can tell when they are making progress. When we bring attention to purveyors of nonsense, and the reaction of the exposed is to bring legal actions against us for our “meddling”, that is the ultimate tell-tale sign that they can NEVER defend their claims or their bad behavior. The SGU and Science Based Medicine are no strangers to the effects of having to legally defend ourselves (at significant costs of time, energy, and money). Therefore, we stand in solidarity with our peers around the world any time they face similar legal abuses from some of the more disreputable characters we speak out against.
The latest victim in the skeptical community to suffer threats is Mark Tilbrook of The United Kingdom. He must defend himself against the dark arts in the form of one Sally Morgan, a self-convinced psychic whose team of thugs (which includes her husband John) has threatened legal action and physical harm to Mark.
But what has Sally so outraged at Mark? What legal violation has Mark foisted against Sally? What is worthy of physically harming Mark to stop his actions? Well, Mark handed out fliers at a venue where Sally was performing. And what was on the flyers? Have a read for yourself …
We have a segment coming up on the next Skeptic’s Guide about this topic, so make sure you tune in for that lively discussion. In the meantime, head over to the website of our friends at the Good Thinking Society, because they have taken a lead role in defending Mark. They have gone so far as to have organized a “Psychic Awareness Month” movement, which I hope will one day become ingrained in our culture’s collective psyche, much the same way psychics currently have their nefarious tentacles in millions of people everywhere.
