Heureux jour de Bastille!
“But they’re marching, to Bastille Day,
la guillotine will claim her bloody prize.
Free the dungeons of the innocent,
the King will kneel and let his kingdom rise!”
– Rush, lyrics from Bastille Day
We are led to believe in our basic history classes (and one Rush song from 1975) that there was this tremendous “storming” of the infamous French prison. That appears to be more of a myth than reality. The liberation of the 7 prisoners from The Bastille seems to have been held high as more of a symbolic achievement of the French Revolution, but it was hardly a throng of endless Frenchfolk with torches and pitchforks bombarding this holding facility.
Nonetheless, it is a day of celebration for people of French descent, so to them we say: Heureux jour de Bastille!
