It is an exciting time to be alive. In the last 20 years the discovery of exoplanets – planets around other stars and therefore outside our solar system – has exploded. There are now over 1700 confirmed exoplanets. We are starting to get a picture of the many different types of planets and different configurations of solar systems out there. Previously we had only one example – our own. Now we know there are hot Jupiters, mini-Neptunes, and mega-Earths. We are also getting an idea of how many Earth-like planets are out there – billions in our galaxy – that could potentially support life.
