The polar vortex might not come back this year… but then again, it might.
Halloween is on the horizon, and we are once again inundated with stories from and/or about people who really do believe that ghosts, goblins, devils, vampires, and zombies (among other “scary” things) are real. As such, there is no shortage of ridiculous comments to suffer. Please suffer with me, here are five doozies!
Exciting and scary news about earth’s magnetic field. The latest research shows that our north and south magnetic poles could reverse not only in the near future but in as little as one human lifetime.
Imagine as a kid your compass app points to the north as it should but then for most of your life it doesn’t seem to know where to point anymore. Sometimes south, then west, then north-east. Finally at the end of your life your compass finally and permanently points to the south as it will for many hundreds of thousands of years.
A new study published in the journal Nature finds that growing grasses in a complementary mixture can have higher yields than growing in a monoculture – growing only a single cultivar.
New numerical modeling examined ocean circulation during the last ice age, about 21, 000 years ago, indicates that icebergs from the North American ice sheet may have frequently made it to South Carolina and sometimes even as far south as south Florida. These models are consistent with recently discovered iceberg scour marks on the ocean floor.
Crocodilians are more skilled hunters than you may have thought. New research describes sophisticated hunters working in groups and employing sophisticated techniques requiring collaboration to bring down their prey.
I’ve got a new-found mad respect for crocodilians (crocodiles, alligators, gharials, and caimans) after researching this news-item. I’m not saying I love them as much as bacteria and archaea but they are damn impressive nonetheless.
Just when you thought you have seen and heard it all, there is now a woman claiming that ghosts possess her body, take control of her, and uses her to write messages from beyond the grave. Of course they can! Why didn’t we realize this sooner? It makes perfect sense that a “ghost” would want to take control of an agent to send written messages, as opposed to simply appearing before the eyes of a psychic and then the psychic interprets what he or she think the ghosts are telling them. Writing is a much more exact means of getting the message across from the spirit-realm.
Those mysterious warm and hot jupiters may have been coerced into very close orbits by big planets orbiting in a different plane.
When exo-planet hunting began in earnest decades ago with equipment that actually had the ability of finding one, there was much talk about finding rocky planets like the earth. We, of course, did not yet have the ability of finding earth twins as we do now. Earth-sized planets were simply too small to tug their parent stars in any discernible way. They were likewise too small to block enough of the light of their star in any way we could detect. Giant gas planets however had none of these problems and that is why they were the first exoplanets found.
